Such is the case with the band Doll. Doll's basic ingredients are powerful simple tunes that are executed with a solid driving beat and polished melodies that leave you humming their songs long after you have heard them. Even their lyrics are straight forward andto the point. Case in point: in "Love You Tonight", where lead vocalist, Diane Earl, sings of wanting the attention of her busy man, "all work and no play can make a man crazy, what I say you know is true. I'm gonna work you in another way. I need some lovin tonight from you." Doll is comprised of Diane Earl, lead vocals, percussion and keyboards; Bill Madden, vocals and bass guitar; Randy Mitchell, background vocals and guitar; Keith Boyce, drums, and Chris Mostart, background vocals, keyboards and saxophone. Doll was conceived in October, 1979, a dream concept born in the minds of record producer, engineer and arranger, Mallory Earl and his wife, Diane Earl. Mallory Earl has been engineering and producing records since the age of 16. His experience goes back way before those days when at the age of 8 he acted on radio soap operas in his hometown, New York City. He started playing guitar professionally at 13 years of age in Greenwich Village at souch famed coffee houses as the Cafe Wha and the Night Owl. At the age of 17, Mallory was m.c. and host of the famous Cheetah Disco on New York's Broadway. His background led him to all the right people. His first hit was Jay and the American's "Walkin in the Rain". He then went on to receive 18 gold records and 4 platinum records in the last 14 years. Mallory's credits include Hendrix, Isley Bros;, Jefferson airplane, Hot Tuna, Central Station, Neil Diamond, Helen Reddy, Ronnie Law, Split Enz, and countless others. The business has een good to Mallory and has taken him from New York to San Francisco, London, Paris, Louisiana and Los Angeles. Returning from Europe, Mallory scoured the LA club scene for the right group to produce. Although what he found was good, he felt the current trend was not really appealing to the majority of the American audiences. Then the idea came to both Diane and Mallory to write their own songs and start a band around their own tastes, thus Doll was born. Mallory was greatly inspired by melodies and interpretations that Diane gave to the songs and the idea grew more clear and strong. |
